Sickly garments, by

Susan Olasky (Article)

By Next time you see a doctor or nurse walking around town in scrubs or lab coat, keep your distance. Betsy McCaughey, chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths (RID), says those outfits are crawling with germs, particularly Clostridium difficile (C. diff), a deadly bacteria that sickens nearly half a million people a year in the United States. The statistics she cites are frightening: "65 percent of medical personnel confess they change their lab coat less than once a week, though they know it's contaminated. Fifteen percent admit they change it less than once a month. Superbugs such as staph can live on these polyester coats for up to 56 days."

The concerns of McCaughey, a former lieutenant governor of New York, should be taken seriously. She writes that when scrub-suited people eat in a restaurant, they transfer the germs to the chairs and table. "You could easily pick it up on your hands and then swallow it with your sandwich," she writes. McCaughey's group advocates that hospitals provide laundered scrubs to all employees and forbid them from wearing the scrubs outside the hospital, citing the experience of hospitals like St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis and Monroe Hospital in Indiana as examples.

Reusable Vs. Disposable Textiles

WHY YOUR USE OF REUSABLE MEDICAL LINEN SAVES YOU MONEY AND OUR ENVIRONMENT

REUSABLE

  • Cheaper than disposables in the long term.
  • Preferred by nurses and doctors.
  • Innovations in the laundry technology industry make the laundering process + efficient.
  • Studies by ANSI and AAMI concluded that surgical gowns and drapes are 70% more effective at providing barrier protection than disposable alternatives
  • Professionally laundered linens provide the healthcare facility with a more professional image.
  • By using reusable textiles, health care organizations can eliminate hundreds of thousands to millions of pounds of waste generated by disposables.

DISPOSABLE

  • Used once and trashed.
  • Generate big amounts of waste.
  • Big pollutants of water and air no matter how they’re disposed.
  • Require water, energy and chemicals in order to be manufactured.
  • The cost of disposing hospital waste is $44 to $68 a ton. For a 300-bed hospital, the cost of processing disposable textiles is of $250,000.00 in a year, plus they require more on-site storage, which translates in an extra cost as compared with reusable linen that is delivered according to the facility’s needs.
